In February 1980, the then unnamed crime dog in a rumpled trench coat made his television
and print media debut. By July the winner of a nationwide contest had named the dog
McGruff. This was the beginning of the McGruff campaign and the National Citizens' Crime
Prevention Campaign.
Crime prevention has gone further than D.A.R.E. in the past eight (8) years, and the Sheriff's Office is looking toward the new millennium to expand crime prevention for all of Beaver County. The current list of active crime prevention programs performed by the Beaver County Sheriff's Office are:
- Camp Deputy (Summer Camp)
- Safe Seniors
- Blow the Whistle on Crime (Campus Safety)
- Identi-Kid (Fingerprint Program)
- Bicycle Safety Programs
- Safe School programs
- Various holiday safety programs
